Moving from roadway to 'blueway'

new orleans lafitte blueway

New Orleans has a plan for the future when it comes to its many waterways. Officially called the Urban Water Plan, it incorporates water into the city instead of just trying to keep it out.

Part of the plan includes the Lafitte corridor project. Built in the mid-18th century and used for transport, it has been vacant since the mid-20th century.

That changed after Hurricane Katrina. Now, the canal is being imagined as a "blueway," with a plan to bring water back into the canal, which will serve as a habitat for wildlife and for recreation.

The banks along the canal are being transformed into a bicycle and pedestrian trail, which will open later this summer.
